Sometime last year, I came across this quote by A.W. Tozer that has stuck with me since then: ““What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” What we think and believe about God is the most important thing about us because it affects every area of our lives: relationships, career, finances, etc. As one of my college professors once said, you cannot believe the wrong thing (a lie) about God and live a right life.
So let me ask you: what do you believe about God? Do you really believe what you believe about God? Do you? I mean think about the following truths about God from the Bible: the Bible says that God is good (Psalm 34:8), sovereign (1 Timothy 6:15), holy (Revelation 4:8), omnipotent (all powerful, Matthew 19:26), wise (Jude 25), loving (John 3:16), immortal (1 Timothy 1:17)… and the list could go on and on. Again I ask: do you really believe all this about God?
The answer is not obvious even if you consider yourself a follower of Christ. Why? Because if we truly believe what the Bible reveals about God our lifestyles will show it. I have had the privilege of studying both theology and a bit of psychology and here is one of the points they they both agree: we behave the way we do because of what we believe (especially what we believe about God). We cannot really change our behaviour without changing our beliefs. True transformation begins with changing our core beliefs (worldviews). And so if we truly believe that God is who He says He is, our lives will show it. When it comes to what we truly believe, actions always speak louder than words. Our actions, not our words, reveal our beliefs.
For example, if we truly believe that God is good and all-powerful (that He can do anything), don’t you think we will depend on Him and pray more instead of worrying? And if we believe that God is sovereign, don’t you think we will gladly submit to His will and wholeheartedly trust Him with every detail of our lives? Or if we really believe that God is holy, don’t you think that we will take Him seriously, revere Him and worship Him with everything we are and have?
My dear friend, it is time to seriously think about what we claim to believe about God and examine ourselves to see if we really and truly believe what we claim to believe about Him; because as Tozer said, that is the most important thing about us.
