Reading the Christmas story to my two children has been a lot of fun. When I explained to them that Christmas is Jesus’ birthday, my daughter insisted that we sing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus. We did and when reached to the part “How old are you now?” We all paused for a few seconds, then my son shouted, “Forever!” I thought to myself, That’s very good theology coming from a four-year old!
You see, Jesus’ existence did not start in Nazareth where His mother Mary lived when she conceived Jesus. Contrary to what many think, Jesus’ life did not start in Bethlehem when He was born. Jesus is eternal, or as my son put, He is forever. He has always been. He has no beginning and no end because He is God. Both the Old and New Testaments are filled with passages that speak of His eternality. Consider the following Scriptures: Isaiah 9:6; Micah 5:2; Matthew 1:21 and Philippians 2:5-7, just to mention a few.
The last book of the Bible puts it like this: “He was, and is, and is to come!” (Revelation 4:8)
Let me remind you as we approach this year’s Christmas that Jesus is no longer a baby. He grew up, served, died, came back to life, and became the Saviour of the world. He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords, and one day He will return, not as a baby; not even as a Saviour, but as the Judge of all the living and the dead.
So what? You may ask. Well, Christmas is all about Him and not about us. And because He is the eternal, immortal Son of God, He is worthy of our adoration, worship and praise. I hope you will choose to adore and praise Him this Christmas, instead of adoring and giving self whatever self desires. Make this year’s Christmas ALL about Him… because it is about Him. It is HIS birthday!
